Summary

We are looking for Arabic speaking befrienders to support our Arabic speaking beneficiaries.

Detailed description

The role of befriender at Wycombe Refugee Partnership may include:

  • Registering the family with the GP and dentist, helping towards independence in arranging and attending appointments. Occasional explaining of NHS appointment/referral letters and helping to request interpreters if necessary. 
  • Orientation of the High Wycombe town, including orientation to shops of specific interest and supermarkets.
  • Registering at the library, with follow up visits to help them understand and access services/community groups.
  • Providing assistance with transport to appointments, working towards independent travel as much as possible.         
  • Helping read school emails and information, and liaising with the education team
  • Helping the family keep a diary/system of important school dates, appointment dates etc
  • Helping with Universal Credit / Child Benefit applications and appointments


You will be part of the Volunteer Supporter team, with a Team Lead and other volunteers to support and guide you. You will receive orientation, induction and will shadow another volunteer to learn how we work alongside our beneficiaries.


Skills required


  • Arabic (able to understand spoken Levantine dialects), fluent English
  • Good listening and communication skills
  • The ability to work sensitively, show empathy and maintain confidentiality.
  • The ability to work as part of a team, a non-judgmental attitude and the ability to treat people with respect and dignity, irrespective of race, religion, or status.

About Wycombe Refugee Partnership

We are a multi-cultural charity in High Wycombe who support refugees and asylum seekers in and around High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire to rebuild their lives and integrate into the local community.
We give wrap-around support including local orientation, schools registrations, NHS registrations, English learning and ad-hoc paperwork support. We have a womens' social group and run activities for refugee children and their families.
