Summary
Volunteers meet people referred due to loneliness and low mood and provide emotional support for 6 months to leave the person in a better place.Detailed description
Volunteers are matched with people based on common interests, activities and life experiences where possible, although sometimes the most unexpected matches work the best. Partnerships may go for a walk together, have a chat over coffee or do an activity with the aim of building a trusting relationship so the person can build their confidence and self esteem and feel stronger as a result. Regular contact with a volunteer is supportive and can help a person's wellbeing because the volunteer is independent, objective and not there to judge them. They will listen and they may make suggestions or signpost. Above all they are consistent and reliable, showing up each week for 6 months, following the guidelines and keeping to the boundaries to ensure the partnership is positive and successful.
Volunteering as a befriender with Bucks Mind can give you a connection with others as part of a recognised and respected mental health charity and enhance your levels of wellbeing, satisfaction and confidence. It can give you experience for your career or just a sense of purpose and usefulness. We provide training and support, regular development sessions, ask for 2 references and do a DBS check to ensure you are the right fit for the role. If this isn't quite right for you we may have other roles that are. Together we can improve the lives of people and help prevent mental ill health.
