Summary
Could you visit or phone a lonely older person? Chat over a cuppa, catch up and encourage? Providing some much needed company can make such a difference!Detailed description
Become a Befriending Volunteer supporting a lonely older person in your community. You'll be matched with an isolated older person and make a huge difference by visiting regularly to provide company, friendship and support.
What do Befriending Volunteers do?
Our Befrienders are matched with a local older person who has limited social contact. They visit them or phone regularly to provide companionship, often over a cuppa! This regular contact can make a real difference to the older person’s health and life. It is really appreciated.
Sometimes, where both parties are happy to, this can extend to going out for a walk, a coffee or to the local shops together. We always try to pair volunteers with older people who have shared interests and experiences.
What you will get out of it
- It's a great way to make a real difference to someone's life
- You'll be giving something back to your community
- You get to be part of Age UK Buckinghamshire's volunteer team
- Volunteers tell us they find befriending really rewarding and get lots out of it themselves.
What is expected of me?
Befriending volunteers are expected to visit or call regularly. Typically, this is an hour most weeks but can vary from this.
Volunteers complete a short relevant training session and provide references.
